Looking at buying a new rod and reel to add to the collection. Have a few thoughts on types but was wondering what size rod eg. kg rating and the length. The rods I am looking at are the: Shimano River Raider Pfluger Trion Tournament Series Penn Pinpoint Tournament. These are all around the same price range so I was just wondering thoughts and what size people thought. For the reel i am pretty well locked in to a Curado 200E5. It will be the first decent reel I have bought so it will be a good indicator on future reels that I buy. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Cheers Nigel

Nigel, what purpose do you mainly intend to use it for, eg I have a 4-6kg pinpoint that I can cast for long periods with and have trolled up one at 130cm using it.

Nigel I have both a 4-6kg (6') and a 6kg (5'8) which can be cast all day and troll a 130 mm Muldoon when you are chasing both big and small species. I especially like the 6kg because of its size fishing in the explorer.
Cannot speak highly enough of the pinpoints as value for money and being ably to handle a big fish.

Can't go wrong with a Curado! As for Rods I have a Raider rod (5 to 8kg Barra Mauler) Broke it at the MM trip. Took alot before it broke. Its was a good rod, but the guide did not line up and I think PMB (Luke) was also saying he had the same problem with his. The rod still works the same, it was only the looks. Shimano did have a problem with the cork handles coming apart, but I think that is all fix now. With the Penn Pinpoint Tournament I have seen a bloke go to knock a lure off a snag and break the end off his rod with little effort. Thats a graphite rod for you. Other than that I have heard good things. I don't know anything about the Pfluger Trion Tournament Series.

great choice there Stormy, love the Curados - great value for money. Cant help u with any of those rods as I dont own any of them but then again Iv never heard any bad things about all three choices. I would be more inclined to pick one and have it as a dedicated casting or trolling rod, not try and do both.

i've got one of the river raiders, i think its about 6kg, but i'll check for you later. actually bought it to cast the heavier, bulkier lures, which it does fine(ie codman series). i find it a little bit stiff for anything under 5/8oz. i was surprised how well it performed and felt when trolling. please keep in mind that it hasn't seen the same stresses as my usual trolling rod.

The pfluegers are light as mate and real responsive, The pinpoints are a good allrounder and well known to land the bigguns and the raiders the same. The handles on the raiders i found were filled with a lot of cork filler to hide the gaps in the cork, The trions have good grips as do the pinpoints. For me it would be a toss up between the pinpoint and the trion

I've got a Trion 6' 5-10kg gathering dust in the shed , not enough whip in the tip for casting IMO . Prefer the 2-4kg Pinpoints tho' did manage to shorten 1 myself without to much effort , now it makes a good troller .

Do yourself a favor and get a 6'2" 6kg Pinn Point. Heavy enough to hold any fish you will catch in this part of the world but still light enough to cast smaller lures / SB's with. Should pay no more than $115 for it.

go buy some cheap ass in the bargain bin rods try them out with everything you will use on them find one you like that feels comfortable [ lenth and weight roughly ] then match it to a more expensive rod, save buying a dear ass rod and not using it thats my two cents but l'm a cheep skate ,l still use the cheap rods
