While exploring a bit was new water last week i ran into the guys from the DPI doing some electro fishing, nice blokes.
I fired a few questions their way and they seemed more that happy to answer them, got some good info on a couple streams i'd never realy thought about fishing untill now too

Anyway, we got to talking about weirs & fish ladders, i asked if cod used them much and the guys said they had just spent 24hours at the wentworth weir and in that 24 hours they had trapped 5 cod over the meter mark that had traveled up through the ladder  , one being over 120cm in length, they said the opening of the fish ladder was 30cm wide and the largest cod had a head 28cm wide, they where excited about a fish of this size getting through the fish ladder.

They also told me about some reserch on weirs that spill over the top and weir that poor from under the wall, they have found fish/fry that travel under the weir often get killed but the ones that go over the top most often live, even if they land in very shallow water on the other side, they claim this reserch will effect how future weirs are built

Cheers.

Top stuff Ray  as usual your info is well worth the read. Interesting on the 120 cod getting through good to see the larger models moving between locks.

Well done Ray, some good stuff, perhaps this will assist the breeding processes greatly in the lock regions.

They have a couple of ladders along the broken Robbie.
Last time I look at one of them it just about had no water in it.

LOL Just like the big logs they placed into the ovens river a couple of years ago as part of there resnagging operations. The put the logs there in winter/spring, and in summer they were all out of the water!!LOL

Guys
the "sea to Hume" fishway project is part of the Murray darling Basin Assoc. native Fish strategy, we had the MDBA present at the recent NFA agm in Barmah and some of the work they are doing is fantastic for native fish. Very soon there will be fishways completed on all the weirs, locks from lake Hume to the Murray mouth.
more info can be found here if your interested.

Less than 10% of weir/locks in the MDB have fish ladders.

5 x m+ in 24hrs, all trapped at Mildura because there is no fish ladder....(ladder going in soon)....makes me a piss poor fisherman.

They would have been better off checking licences and eskies. :(

Wang, there is good reasons why they put the timber where they did, to do with spawning in spring
