Let the Loddon Flow

Postby Ray » Wed Jul 28, 2010 9:56 pm

G'day Blokes,

Well, first of all, its been a while for various reasons but thought you blokes might be interested to fight a good fight...

Its pretty sad when you see a river like the loddon dry up and die. The section i am talking about is the last 70km's above Kerang where there has been no water flow for what seems like 5-7 yrs or more.

It creates a pretty awful precedence to dry up a river because there is not enough water for both irrigation and environmental flows.

So i decided to try and do something about it and have started up a blog that i intend to put up research and policy papers to support the reintroduction of flow and eventual restocking of the river with natives.

here's the link to the site, and i invite you to register for updates as they get posted.
Let the Loddon Flow

Thanks for reading and your anticipated support in this fight...

cheers

Ray

Interesting subject, dont know the real reasons for it to happen, but I was born and raised in Kerang.
Used to catch yellas, cat fish redfin in the 70's on bait no worries at all sides of Kerang. Then the huge carp invasion happened you would see them by the hundreds nuzzle into banks, but still manage to catch yellas now and then, the cod could be caught also but most reported catches were Pyramid Creek and the great water in NSW , back then in winter, from barham to moulamiene the forrests were in deep flood with the roads sandbaged for traffic to flow, days of great fishing and flourishing farms. Now sadly the reliance on the Loddon to supply Kerang is not required from pipeline down the old railway from Koondrook/Barham to Kerang. the irrigation channels are filled via Torrumbarry-Kow Swamp ect, seems no one really cared of the environment the great Loddon supplied to the area back then so I will watch this thread with intrest and whish you good luck on what will no doubt supply some interesting points of view and banter.
Cold Beer, Bent Rod, just doesn't happen enough.

Have only fished the loddon Once which was about 8 weeks ago i think, as had to do some recon for next years comp, always fish Barham & up along murray. 1st impressinions were ,wow what a river ,never seen so potential Cod snags, was almost jumping out of my skin  . But was also worried about the flow of water as when out of the wind boat didnt move! . Got no fish that day ,not a hit, still was in awe of all the snags though. Noticed a dirty brown waterline marks on my boat, i have never had to physicaly scrub them off before, still have a slight stain now, most likey from the Gums ,but no current (from what i thought,) Was blowing about 20 knots lol) All rivers need a flow ,or fish will not survive, will join up to blog for sure Ray.

The loddon will flow. Alot of the creekes flowing into the loddon at lannecorie are running there banks. Things should be looking up for the loddon.
